Our Story
In 2013, after 65 years combined experience in (in technology, marketing, human resources and a previous Navy Career), we embraced a new chapter: owning Serpent Ridge Vineyard. Our passion stemmed from traveling to vineyards, talking to vineyard owners and winemakers, and especially the experience of enjoying wine
Established in 2004, Serpent Ridge Vineyard opened its tasting room doors to the public in the Spring of 2009.
A whole lifestyle change emerged as we began our journey in our new vineyard home, while maintaining our Corporate Careers. Hal continued his education in vineyard management while Karen secured her winemaking certificate from Penn State.
Our dream intertwined with a desire to cultivate not just grapes but community. With our combined experience and a relentless work ethic, we immersed ourselves in the rhythms of the land. Each vine tells a story, and as we nurture them, we connect with the earth and our community, transforming stress into serenity and passion into purpose.
Embracing the journey from corporate roles to vineyard life has been transformative. With business acumen and a relentless work ethic, we now cultivate not just grapes but a sanctuary for all. This shift allows us to share our passion for agriculture, welcoming locals and travelers alike to experience a healthier lifestyle amidst nature’s beauty. Our vineyard is more than just a business; it’s a place of learning, connection, and rejuvenation.

The Art of Wine-Making
Our wine making techniques vary according to the demands of the fruit rather than any preconceived recipe, utilizing old world techniques while embracing new age technology. Each vintage is grown and/or vinified in small lots followed by gentle ageing in stainless steel and flex tanks, with American and French oak. We grow Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Sangiovese and Chardonnel. We develop relationships with other local grape growers to source additional quality fruit for our production. The results are beautiful wines that are sure to please even the most discerning palates.

It’s a fun, educational, and delicious way to support Serpent Ridge Vineyard, your local winery. We grow our grapevines on-site for wine production, where we harvest, ferment, and blend our wines. Plan your visit to enjoy our award-winning wines in our beautiful tasting room or on our grounds.
